Welcome to the page for the 2012 Tinahely Duathlon. Below you will find all the details on the event you will need, including descriptions and maps of the routes, parking and facilities.
This is our second annual Duathlon after last years successful inaugural event. Changes this year include the introduction of chip timing and a new opening run route (see route descriptions below)

A one-day licence costs €5 and is available on the Triathlon Ireland website by clicking here. There will be a limited amount of ODLs available to purchase on the day, but we would encourage you to purchase and print your licence before the event to avoid registration delays. Run Route 1:
As mentioned above, we have changed the opening run route this year to increase the distance to 5km in line with the Sprint Duathlon benchmark. Competitors will be brought from the transition area to the start of the route on the Boleybawn road near Rothwell’s farm approx 0.5km away. The route will continue along the road for into Greenhall for approx 1.15km, it will then take a right and continue for approx 1.25km down into Tomnafinogue. The route will then enter the Tomnafinogue Walk car park on the left and then right onto the Railway Walk itself continuing on for approx 2.6km on a dirt / gravel walkway which will bring competitors straight back into the transition area.
Bike Route:
The bike route will consist of one 19.8km lap (see map below points A or J). It will exit the Railway Walk carpark taking a right towards Lugduff service station. At the intersection the route will turn left into Tinahely village (B) on the R747. It will continue uphill past Pinetos on Barton st (C), through Coolruss leaving Tinahely on the Shilellagh road R749, through Ballyraheen cross (D) and into Shilellagh village. At the T-junction (E) in Shilellagh village the route will turn left and keep left again on the Coolattin road (F). It will continue past Coolattin Golf course, and straight through by the turnoff for Coolboy (G) into Fairwood (I) before finishing back at the Railway Walk carpark (J).
Competitors must have a road worthy bike and wear a hard shell helmet. When the competitor is entering the transition area to set up their transition space, they will be required to demonstrate that their bikes are roadworthy e.g. by spinning wheels and pulling brakes.
This is time trial cycling so drafting rules will apply. The drafting rule means that cyclists may not be closer than 10 metres to other cyclists unless passing which must be done quickly. See Manual of Guidance and ITU rules section 5.5 for full description.
Stewards will alert competitors to dangers and descents and these will also be set out in the pre-race briefing.
Run Route 2:
The 2nd run route is the same as last year an out and back on the Togher extension of the Railway Walk and is 2.8km in length. The surface is gravel all the way and it is relatively flat. From the transition area the run will start at the walks entrance taking an immediate left after about 30mtrs onto the Togher extension before the bridge. The route will turn left along the riverbed before cutting into the woods approx 0.5km in. After 1.4km the route will take a sharp haipin right turn onto a gravel lane running parrallel to the walk before rejoining it after approx 0.25km, the route will then continue back the way it came to its finish at the Railway carpark.
Please note that the path does narrow in some places along the route, especially through the woods and therefore competitors will be required to run on the left side of the path, giving way, if required, to competitors on the return journey.
